I first met Simone Brewster with her baby son strapped to her front at NOW Gallery where I had suggested that she pitch to do an exhibition. She got the gig and produced an exhibition that spanned her amazing practice - jewellery, wooden vessels, painting, ornate haircombs - all held together with colourful sculpture. The exhibition summed up her concern with identity, the power of objects, memory gender and more.
Simone’s wide outlook, she trained as an architect and designs with a bold sentiment to engage with people whatever the material or size.
We discussed connecting cultural history and tradition, why texture is important in Simone’s practice and how motherhood has changed her perspective.
