Underpass

2024

I met a photographer on the street photographing a woman in a wetsuit outside our local chippy in front of the seascape mural. I asked him if he would do a photograph of me rollerskating in my grandfather’s top hat and wearing my Mum’s pink cape. Generations propping me up. I have always seen cloaks and capes as protection, a way of wearing something that covers you from distress. My Mum’s pink cape is particularly significant and still smells a bit of her.

The underpass is the place going from and to. A bleak place breaking into sunlight at both ends.

I want to be free, I want to roller-skate to the end of the world and be powerful. I may be grounded with the river blocking my way.
