A zoom performance hosted by Jemima Burrill looking at the expectations and assumptions around motherhood/womenhood. Starting with her Megaphone Woman performance ‘Speak Up’: we need to shout about it, talk bravely, be eloquent, fill space, go loudly, take up room, articulate evidently and hold the floor – but we don’t. My performance examines, with beetroot, how women are characterised as chatter boxes but in public women speak as little as 25% as much as men. Check out statistics on Speak up – Radio 4 with Mary Ann Seighart. She studied linguistics as part of her degree, and in socio-linguistics it was taught that men talk more than woman, this was 30 years ago. This performance looks loudly at how this is still very much the case.
