Matthew Herbert: Plat Du Jour, 2005
Matthew Herbert is the king of samplers. He created an album – Plat du Jour – about attitudes to food; sampling amongst other things 80,000 chicks, a crystal of beat sugar and a coke can. I went on tour with him, as the chef cooking on stage, creating smells to add an extra dimension to the musical experience. Smells of sautéeing chicken during Herbert’s Chicken track wafted over the audience. During An Empire of Coffee, I roasted coffee beans, and bubbled toffee during Sugar. I made this film from footage shot at performances in Berlin, Porto, Copenhagen, The Hague, Montreal, Paris and Bristol. Click here for more.
